Wow, what a great fair we had yesterday celebrating different countries and their cultures from all around the world! Students have worked hard over the past few weeks researching their country and creating a poster or trifold. The artifacts students found and brought in were excellent!!
3 more school days left!! Students had two classes this week to finish off their country research. They needed to include inch, foot and at least 1 yard question for their presentation. A goal of 50 facts totally was set. Some students may need to do some research at home on their own to get closer to this goal. On Wednesday, students began designing their posters and trifolds. They are off to a good start! Our Multi-cultural Fair is next Thursday, June 21. An email was sent to all Grade 4 parents explain the artifact portion of this assignment. A copy of the letter can also be found on the "team page" of our blog.
Students were busy this week continuing with their country research and Year End Assessment. Students have two more periods next week to gather information on their country. On Wednesday, they will begin working on their poster or if they choose to purchase, their trifold. Students also had two periods every day to work on writing the paragraphs for each letter for their YEA. They were supposed to have the rough drafts of their paragraphs completed by the end of this week. Below are the examples that were shown in class and what mark they would get, a 4, 3, 2, or 1 as well as a brief description of what we are looking for. I have asked all students to bring in 1 plastic sandwich bag for Monday that they will put some scrapbooking materials into so they can use to decorate their pages with.
Wednesday we visited Heritage Park and it was an exciting and beautiful day! We couldn't have asked for better weather. Many of the Grade 4's had never been to Heritage Park and it was a great opportunity for all to see what life was like in the past. 13 days of school left! On Thursday, students were introduced to our last Humanities assignment which is a country research project. Students chose a country that they would like to learn more about. They were not allowed to chose Canada, the United States or the countries they studied last year in Grade 3. Students will be researching next week to find as much information as they can on their country. They will be looking for answers to 3 different types of questions.
Inch questions - questions that can be found immediately with a google search. Ex. What is the population of China? Foot questions - questions that involve gathering information and creating a summary to answer the question. Ex. What is England's national sport, and how is it played? Yard questions - a question that involves looking at multiple resources to come up with your own answer or opinion. Ex. Would you recommend visiting your country why or why not? Once the research portion is completed, students will be working on displaying their information on either a poster paper provided by the school or a individually bought and brought in trifold. On June 21, all grade 4 students will be involved in a Multi-Cultural Fair where they will present their research and poster to 3 of the other grade 4 classes and then have a chance to view 3 classes projects. More information will come on this later. Students worked on creating their personal timelines this week. They turned out great! Below are some pictures.
This week students looked more closely at some important events in Alberta's history. We briefly discussed each event and then students chose 3 to further investigate. They answered the questions: what is the event (provide a summary), why is important in Alberta's history and do you agree or disagree with it being an important event in the past? A sheet went home on Thursday to be filled out for Monday's class. A copy of the sheet is below. Students will work on creating their own personal timeline to show important events that have happened in their life.
Students continued to work on their immigration posters that they started last week. They were to make a poster encouraging people to move and settle in Alberta based off information in the early 20th century. This is a two part assignment. Once they finish their poster, they will also be creating a radio ad. Both their poster and the radio ad will be presented to the class on Wednesday, May 9. We looked at some techniques that should be included into their radio ad which are posted below. Students will be creating and rough and good copy of their radio ad but their good copy will be written by hand, not on the computer.
We also learned about the Ukrainian people in Alberta this week. 1 out of every 10 people in Canada has Ukrainian heritage and many of those people live in Alberta! Due to poverty, famine and the Russian influence in the Ukraine, massive amounts of Ukrainians immigrated to Canada and helped settle the West. There is a large portion of those people in Alberta due to the offer of free land and fertile farm land. On Friday, students made pysanky eggs to learn more about this special Ukrainian tradition. This week our focus was on how people moved west to settle and populate Alberta from the east coast of Canada as well as from many European cities. We looked at how the railway being built significantly impacted how people moved to Alberta and changed the way people traveled. Students learned that the immigration department of Canada, CN and CP rail as well as rich, business owners were all influential in bringing people to Alberta. We watched a video on people stalled Grande Prairie by taking a treacherous route starting in Edson. Students learned how difficult it was to travel from place to place by horse and wagon. We also looked at many different forms of media like posters, booklets, pamphlets and newspaper articles that were created and sent overseas encouraging people to immigrate to Alberta. Students then began designing their own immigration poster in their creative journals. Their posers must be from the years 1880-1920 and must include pictures as well as words, sentences or phrases. We also talked about how advertising uses specific tactics to attract people to buy their product or pay attention to what they are saying by using things like colour, specific word choice and positive imagery. Below are some pictures of some rough copies.
On Friday, we had our second school wide design challenge day! This is a whole school initiative to get students to think creatively, solve problems and collaborate with others. Our challenge this time was for students to create an item you would find at a carnival that would be suitable for critters to use aka "The Critter Carnival!" Below are some pictures of their creations! |
