Math – This week, students wrote a Numbers Test on Monday. These tests have since been graded and sent home for parent review/signatures. Students also spent time in class learning how to use Venn and Carroll Diagrams to sort and classify numbers for a variety if criteria (i.e. odd/even numbers, 2/3/4 digit numbers etc.). We will continue to practice using diagrams and charts in Math next week and will also begin our studies in estimation! A big hit this week with students in Math was "Prodigy"! Each of the students received their own usernames and passwords for this amazing website and have been busy exploring and solving various mathematical problems online. Students in 4E and 4F set personal goals to spend time in Prodigy 2-3 times a week (at home and at school). You can find the link to this website on the side bar. Want to learn more about Prodigy? Be sure to watch the video below! Estimation Station – There were 150 pieces of macaroni in our Estimation Station jar this week. Congratulations to B.S. in 4F for nailing that number right on the head! WOW! We will have a new Estimation Station activity set up for 4E and 4F students on Tuesday. Science – In Science, students were taken on a nature walk around the schoolyard to observe and collect examples of human waste. We saw lights on outside houses during the day time. Students considered this to be very wasteful! A car drove by us and we saw black smoke coming out from the muffler. The students agreed that this was not good for our environment and the air we breathe! We saw litter of all sorts on the ground. We wore biodegradable gloves and cleaned it up! We brought the waste we collected into our classroom to examine and sort into proper disposal systems. Through this activity, students became aware of the activities that produce waste in our daily lives. Students were able to identify alternate behaviours that can produce less waste. Today, students created a "Reduce, reuse, recycle, RESPECT" page (see above photo) in our Visual Journal to remind us to be kind to our earth (we only have one!) and to do our part each and everyday!
Flex – We began our read aloud novel study in Flex this week! The students have been enjoying listening to Kenneth Oppel's "Silverwing" novel, and learning about the main character "Shade". We will continue our novel study next week and are looking forward to meeting Kenneth Oppel on October 24th in the Learning Commons! Miscellaneous – A reminder to parents that there is no school for students on Monday, as it is Thanksgiving Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday! Students received a Picture Day form yesterday. Picture Day is scheduled for October 19. Remember to dress your best! Have a great weekend! Hug your loved ones and think about what you are thankful for. - Mrs. Ross |
