Math – This week in math, students finished up their measurement studies by completing and submitting all unit tasks for evaluation. I did not give students a quiz or test for this particular unit as I felt, overall, students performed very well during our daily lessons and activities. 4E and 4F really enjoyed one of the final tasks in our measurement unit, which had them planning their own flower gardens. Students also had to determine the area of their garden configurations using square meters and enjoyed putting artistic touches on their garden projects!
On Thursday, we began our studies in the fractions unit. Students discussed unit vocabulary and began looking at fractions of a whole, and fractions as part of a set or group. Students continue to have daily practice in their basic facts by working in their mixed facts “Math in a Flash" booklet, and also collaborated in small groups to discuss and answer the following questions. We will continue to refer back to these questions throughout the unit.
Prodigy – Students are encouraged to log into their Prodigy accounts at home to complete the various fractions activities assigned for our current unit. www.prodigygame.com/Play/ Science – In Science, students made their final bean plant observations, and after 31 days, were so very excited to finally take them home! I hope you have found a space for the plants to spread their roots and continue to grow. Enjoy! Our big focus this week was on students' independent written task: "The Importance of Plants: The Role of Plants on Earth". This task was assigned to students on Tuesday and was due on Friday. Students had some class time to work on this task, but for the most part, the task was completed at home. I have to say, overall, students did a wonderful job answering the open-ended questions. I was particularly impressed with students' creativity and technological skills as they responded to the third question! May's Upcoming Events and Important Due Dates – Heritage Park field permission forms were sent home this week for our field trip coming up on Wednesday, June 6th. If you haven’t done so already, please return the acknowledgement of risk form and payment as soon as possible. All grade four students attended a presentation on Friday presented by the Calgary Public Library in regards to their summer reading programs running from June 15th to September 7th. I hope students will consider exploring the literacy-based programs offered by the CPL during the summer months! May 26 to June 4 - Japan Homestay students are at NCS May 30 - Grade 4 Drama Club (3:00-4:00 P.M. in the Foods Room) June 1 - Heritage Park field trips forms are due... we are in need of Parent/Guardian Volunteers! As discussed in class, students must respond to question number one and two in sentence/paragraph form. They may use the green sheet provided for their rough copy and then copy their answers onto lined paper or type/print in a Word Document. Students may also submit their answers to me via Google Docs to: [email protected] For question number three, students may respond in any way - poster, Google Slideshow, diagram/sketch, poem or dramatic scene... the sky is the limit! Please let me know if you have any questions about this task. A reminder that the due date for questions 1-3 is on: Friday, May 25 by the end of the school day - 3:00 P.M.
Math – This week in math, students continued their work in the ninth Math in a Flash book. We are over halfway finished this mental math book and only have one more book to go! Students were also busy exploring area using square units this week. They used grid paper to find the area of various rectangles in square centimeters, and have also started to estimate and measure area of triangles and other polygons. Students were asked to complete the "Estimating and Measuring Area" task for homework (including the "Stretch your thinking" question). This task is due on Tuesday for both 4E and 4F students. Prodigy – Students should continue to log into their Prodigy accounts online to brush up on their understanding of various mathematical skills and concepts. www.prodigygame.com/Play/ Estimation Station – There were 368 cm of string in our Estimation Station jar this week. Congratulations to D.O. in 4F who came closest with an estimate of 360 cm! Well done, D.O! We will be taking next week off from Estimation Station as it is a short week, but it will be up and running again during the week of May 28! Science – Students enjoyed another week of learning about plants in science! They were amazed at the results from our celery experiment (see photos posted below) and continue to demonstrate great care for their bean plants. Our bean plants are ALL growing now and most are approaching the mature plant stage. Students have been asking nearly every day when they'll get to take the plants home and I have said next week! 4E and 4F students will also have a take-home written assignment to complete for science next week. The assignment will be discussed and distributed to students on Tuesday and is due on Friday. Many thanks to all the families who donated celery for our experiment this week. We had so much that we were able to snack on it in class as well! Pysanka Eggs Artist in Residence – 4F students demonstrated great listening skills and behaviour during our pysanka eggs workshop yesterday. They were attentive as Jean explained the various symbols and techniques, and we're all very excited to see the results! I will send the eggs home with students as soon as they're received, which should be sometime next week. Students are reminded to bring in a container (with lid) by Tuesday to transport their egg home. Many, MANY thanks to NCS's Parents' Council for funding this amazing workshop for all grade four students! Swim lessons - I have received 4F's report cards from Vivo. It appears that all students did extremely well and have been evaluated in terms of specific skills and levels. 4F students will receive their report cards from me on Tuesday.
Upcoming Events – May 18 - PD Day (NCS is closed for students) May 23 - Healthy Hunger Lunch (Tim Hortons) May 23 - Grade 4 Drama Club (3:00-4:00 P.M. in the Foods Room) May 26 to June 4 - Japan Homestay students are at NCS May 30 - Grade 4 Drama Club (3:00-4:00 P.M. in the Foods Room) Math – This week, students continued their work in the measurement portion of the curriculum. They began to explore area using geometric shapes and square units. Students learned that they can quickly multiply length x width to find the area of rectangles, rather than counting all the square units. 4E students are a little ahead of 4F students in math as a result of 4F's swim lessons this week. I will catch 4F students up on the area lessons next week during our Flex time! Prodigy – I have set up a perimeter assignment for 4E and 4F students to complete online in Prodigy. Please encourage your child to log-in over the weekend to work through the various challenges. Problem of the Week – This week's Problem of the Week is posted below. In this problem, students will need to use their measurement and fractions skills to find solutions to two questions. Good luck!
Estimation Station – There were 380 cm of ribbon in the Estimation Station jar this week. Congratulations to N.W. in 4E who came closest with an estimate of 370 cm. That was an incredible estimate! (4E: 1 / 4F: 1) Science – Students have continued to demonstrate great care for their green bean plants. Some plants are already over 20 cm tall! We will continue to monitor and observe the growth and needs of the plants during the coming weeks. Beginning on Monday, students will complete an independent research project for the plants unit. They will also collaborate with a small group to put together a short presentation for the class based on their independent research. Students may have some homework in Science next week! Celery donations needed: 4E and 4F students will be participating in a science lab next week involving celery! If you are able to donate a whole head/bunch of celery (including stalks with leaves), we would be most appreciative! We will need the celery donations on Monday, please and thank you. Swimming - 4F's had a great time swimming at Vivo this past week! Many thank you's to Ms. Rich, Ms. Tollefson and Mr. Woodall for volunteering their time to help supervise. Upcoming Events – May 14 – Hats on for Mental Health May 15 - School Dance and Activity Afternoon Wednesday May 16 – Mindfulness and Wellness Wednesday (Details T.B.A.) May 16 - Grade 4 Drama Club (3:00-4:00 P.M. in the Foods Room) May 17 - NCS PJ Day May 17 - 4E and 4F Pysanky Eggs Workshop May 18 - PD Day (NCS is closed for students) May 23 - Healthy Hunger Lunch (Tim Hortons) May 23 - Grade 4 Drama Club (3:00-4:00 P.M. in the Foods Room) May 26 to June 4 - Japan Homestay students are at NCS May 30 - Grade 4 Drama Club (3:00-4:00 P.M. in the Foods Room) |
