Math – We continued on with our studies in the Algebra unit this week, as students completed two tasks which had them solving one-step equations in both addition and subtraction. Students also worked together in small groups to solve several algebra-based word problems, and worked hard to incorporate the "W.I.N." acronym (words, illustrations, numbers) to their answers. 4E and 4F students also enjoyed a period of Prodigy time this week, and are currently working in the addition section of the program. During the next two weeks, students will focus on addition and subtraction of numbers up to 10 000 (including decimal numbers).
Prodigy/Problem of the Week: Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. The Problem of the Week posted below is also a wonderful challenge for students to tackle in addition to Prodigy. This will be the last Problem of the Week posted until 2018. Good luck, 4E and 4F students!
Estimation Station – Due to our Ski/Snowboard Day and PD Day this week, Estimation Station was cancelled and will resume next week. Thank you in advance to K.T. from 4E for preparing us with next week's challenge!
Science – We wrapped up our Light Safety research online this week and were excited to begin our Pinhole Camera project! Students got messy in our double period of Science yesterday (see photos below), and are looking forward to putting the cameras to the test outside. A BIG thank-you to our Grade 6 buddies and Ms. Williams for helping us construct the cameras!
4E and 4F students are reminded to "dress for the weather" on Monday as we'll be spending time outside making observations and conclusions with our pinhole cameras. Fingers crossed for continued sunshine!
Flex – We spent our Flex time working on our homeroom's Secret Acts of Kindness cards this week. Students will hand these cards out to their secret friends during the last week of school prior to Winter Break!
Miscellaneous – Students had a wonderful time at the Ski/Snowboarding field trip at COP this past Monday (see photos posted below). It was a beautiful day to spend outside, as the sun was shining and the temperature wasn't too chilly! I was hoping to take more pictures during the trip, but ended up spending most of the day skiing myself!
4F Homeroom - 4F homeroom students have been asked to collect items for "The Spirit of Giving" challenge at Nose Creek School. As a homeroom class, we are hoping to collect various items to fill a large stocking for a family in need in Calgary this holiday season. We will work together as a class to bring in the items from home to fill our stocking up until Friday, December 15. At this time, the stockings will be collected and delivered to the Inn From the Cold. The two individuals that we have been assigned to collect for are 4 and 5 year old boys. These boys would love new socks, mitts, games, toys, books, hygiene items or any other items that you deem appropriate. 4F students and I will have more conversations about the items needed during Flex class next week!
One last reminder that 4F students will be performing at Friday's Winter Concert! The concert will begin at 9:30am in the large gymnasium and all families are welcome to attend.
Enjoy your weekend... only 9 more days of school until Winter Break begins!
