Please make sure you have seen your child's un sac à dos rubric that went home last week. This week we started learning 12 colour words. The colour words will be implemented into upcoming assignments in order for students to demonstrate their understanding of them. Students asked the question: "Quelle est ta cooler préférée?"(what is your favourite colour?) and answered: "Ma couleur préférée est le ______" (my favourite colour is ____).

In French class students created a French dictionnaire. This has pictures of all the types of items one would find in a classroom. Students will use this as a study aid for the unit "La Salle de Classe". In class they have been using the picture dictionary as a means of constructing their own backpack "Sac a Dos". Students will be presenting the backpack to the class after it has been created. The final assessment in this unit will be a quiz on "La Salle de Classe."
Students have been working on a project in class that reinforces the vocabulary we have been working on, namely classroom objects. Students are making “un sac a dos” (a backpack) and drawing six different supplies inside while incorporating numbers as well. They also need to write a sentence listing two items that can be found in a classroom. They will glue this written paragraph in French on the back of their backpack. When finished, they will present their final product to the class. Students will have the next few classes to work on it before it is sent home to be finished and/or practiced for their presentation.
—Mme Jagger Students had one class this week to finish off their un sac a dos project. 4E presented on Wednesday, January 31 and 4B presented on Thursday, February 2. All students who were here received their rubric to be signed and returned. We are all finished the matériel scolaire until and will be starting les coolers (the colours) next week!
Students continued to work with the school supplies vocabulary. They also learned the names of some of the rooms around the school like le gymnase and la bibliothèque (library). Students were introduced to their next project which will be creating un sac a dos (backpack) with school supplies inside it. They started writing their paragraph in class this week and will begin designing next week. Below is what is required. Students will present their backpack and paragraph to the class on the date listed below.
4B un sac a dos due: Thursday, February 1 4E un sac a dos due: Wednesday, January 31 In the first week of 2018, students in 4C and 4F received back a rubric on their French family trees. They were encouraged to show these rubrics to parents/guardians and have them signed. 4C and 4F then began a study of school and classroom supplies and furniture. In this unit called La Salle de Classe (The Classroom) students will be using the expression: "Il y a . . . " "Il y a" means in English: There is/are. On Wednesday and Thursday students were active in playing a French language game where they became familiar with the vocabulary we will study in this unit. Mr. Brewer encouraged students to connect new French words they are learning to the English ones they already know. This strategy is known as metacognition (thinking about thinking). It is a way for us to learn a new language by forming connections. Many of the new words students are now learning in French have cognates in English (cognates are similar sounding or related words). Thus, in French there is the word 'papier' which means 'paper' in English, 'une règle' means ' a ruler' in English. Règle is a cognate of common English words like regulation, rule or regular in English. Students were taught how they can think of words like this so they can remember the word better. Note also that regent is another word for 'ruler'. Students are truly encouraged to make connections that work for them. In some instances making a mnemonic clue or a silly rhyme in your head can help you to recall words in a new language. In the coming days and weeks we will be creating a dictionary to show the words and doing presentations using the grammar and expressions from class. Students have started working on our next unit, which is learning the places found inside a school. They will also be learning and practicing vocabulary associated with classroom objects and school supplies in the next few weeks.
—Mme Jagger This week we began learning about school supplies. Students will be working with the school supplies vocabulary for the month of January. They started speaking a basic sentence of "I have ___(#) of ____(school supply). For example, "J'ai cinq stylos" which is "I have 5 pens." Below is the vocabulary we will be working with.
In the final weeks of December before the vacation, all students in classes 4C and 4F took an oral test with Mr. Brewer. Students were interviewed one-on-one to establish their fluency, understanding of vocabulary, listening skills and pronunciation. Mr. Brewer marked all the tests and gave students a rubric with comments. Students were scored on the standard 1 ~ 4 scale. Parents/guardians are encouraged to look over the tests, sign the back and return them to Mr. Brewer. Students of 4C put their test rubrics into their duo tangs in Ms. Clark's class. Below you can see an exemplar of the rubric. If you have any questions in regard to the test results feel free to call or e-mail me. Some students had already gone on vacation before the end of December so they did not receive their copy of the rubric. I can e-mail them and/or they can pick them up when they return to school in January 2018:
Students received their rubrics back for their oral test this week. We went over some more holiday vocabulary and students finished their booklets on “les couleurs.” Joyeux Noël grade 4’s! —Mme Jagger
