Welcome to the 39th and 40th weeks of school at NCS! As this week (the last week of school!) was a short week, I combined last week and this week's blog posts together! Last week students continued to work on their ABC's of Grade 4 scrap books, and continued to work towards finishing their Multicultural Project! Students worked so hard and stay on task most of the time! They did great! Students also had a chance to return library books and we began to send home dustings, journals and book bins. Yearbooks also went home last week if you ordered one! On Thursday, June 21st we had our student multicultural fair! A great time was had by all and the posters looked great in all of the classrooms! Many students brought in fantastic artifacts students really were able to experience and learn about new cultures. There was so much tasty food! Please see below for some photos of the event. This week was a short but fun week. Students finished their ABC's scrapbook, and had a chance to present and share. It was really nice to see the finished products of their really hard work this past month. Today, we had our last day of school for the year! We had a sports day, (see below for a few photos), as well as, time to sign our year books, a movie, a picnic and an assembly. It was a fun last day. All of the grade 4 students have learned so much this year, and I have enjoyed being their teacher so much! I hope everyone has a fun and safe summer. Students, I am very grateful that I had this opportunity to be your humanities teacher this year. I hope you made amazing memories and made wonderful friends. Always remember to chase your dreams and to be kind to one another. Until next September,
Ms. Clark

Welcome to the 38th week of school at NCS! This week, students continued to work on their ABC's of grade 4 projects! The scrapbooks look absolutely amazing, and the students have put SO much work into them. Our goal by the end of today was to be done letter L. A few students are taking home their ABC's scrapbooks to work on - STUDENTS: please make sure to bring them back on Monday so we can continue next week in class! Please see below for a few photos from this week! This week, students also worked on their multicultural project. On Monday and Tuesday, students had time to finish researching about their countries. On Wednesday, students were able to start their posters! Some students chose to bring in a trip-fold, while others chose to use brightly colored poster paper that we had at school. So far, the posters look great! The student multicultural fair is on Thursday, June 21st. An email went out to parents earlier this week about the fair. You can also check the main blog. Below are a few pictures of some of their posters! Two more weeks to go! Fun lunch is next Wednesday.
Have a great weekend, Ms. Clark Welcome to the 37th week of school at NCS! Final month of the year! This week has been another busy one here at Nose Creek. Monday, we had our Volunteer Appreciation Night. A few students parents were able to make it out from Grade 4, and for those parents that have volunteered, but could not make it out to the appreciation night, we thank you so very much for your hard work this year! Additionally, Many students across all of the grades took part in the 6th Annual Nose Creek Triathlon on Tuesday! It was sure nice to see so much Kodiak SPIRIT here at school! Thursday Night was Nose Creek's Taste of the Arts night, which was also a wonderful night had buy all! It was inspiring to see all of the art, music and drama that students worked on all year! See below for a few photos from the event! Then, on Wednesday, all Grade 4's went on our year end field trip to Heritage Park! Students got to explore the various parts of Heritage Park, while on our scavenger hunt. There were math, science and humanities questions to try. It was great weather, and a great experience for our students. It seems as if students loved to see what life was like, but also enjoyed the train, learning about schools in the past, as well as, hits like the bakery, candy shop, and the amusement park. I know my group had fun running around to the different areas and speaking with people who worked at heritage park. They also liked looking around the different buildings. Below you will see a few photos that I took while at the park! Although it was a busy week around Nose Creek, students also had a chance to work on their Year End Projects! This week, students completed the rough copies of the "ABC's of Grade 4" Project. We also had an opportunity to self and partner edit on Thursday. Today (Friday), students started on their good copies of the ABC's project! We started on our title pages, and worked from there! We will continue with good copies next week. I told students that if there is anything they want to bring from home to decorate, they are welcome to do so! Below are a few photos from students starting on their title pages. Students also worked on their Multicultural Cultural Project this week. They have each picked their countries, and are well underway for their research! Research is due Wednesday, as we are starting out with our good copy/posters.
Please Note: There may be a few students who are bringing their research or ABC's work home this weekend to catch up. Important Information: -Next week we will be continuing with our Year End Projects -Letter to go home next week about the Multicultural Fair, which will take place on June 21st. Have a great weekend, Ms. Clark Welcome to the 36th week of school here at NCS! I can't believe how quickly the school year is going, we've only got 1 month of school left! This week, grade 4 students in 4C and 4A worked to complete a variety of different things! This week, students continued to read daily for 20-30 minutes each day. We also completed mini poetry unit! Students learned about 4 different types of poetry and 2 common poetic devices. We learned about Paint Chip Poetry, Acrostic Poetry, Haiku Poetry, and Cinquain Poetry, as well as the poetic devices - alliterations and onomatopoeia. Then, they had an opportunity to try creating poetry of their own! Once they had created a few different poems, we editing and created good copies! See below for a few examples! We also spent a fair bit of studying for our quiz this week! Each day, students were given 30 minutes of class time to study! They were able to read notes, study with a partner, make a game, cue cards, or anything else that might help them! I have tried to give in class study time before each quiz this year, for students to prepare. Hopefully this helped many students! Thursday we had our last quiz of the year about People that have settled in Alberta. A few people still need to complete the quiz next week. Thursday students were introduced to our Year End Project! It is called the ABC's of Grade 4. Students are creating an individual scrap book that represents their year in grade 4! They will make a scrapbook page for each letter of the alphabet, and have to cover a wide range of subjects within this. They each were given a planning booklet today, and began working on thinking of different things they learned this year! We also looked at a few past examples. They will be spending 2 periods each day working to complete this scrapbook! It will be a great keepsake at the end of the year that they can bring home! At times, students might have a bit of homework, to make sure they are meeting the daily deadlines. They each have been given a calendar in the back of their planning booklet so they can stay on track. we will be doing daily check-ins to help them stay on task! Once the planning is done, we will get started on editing and then time for good copies! Students and I brainstormed how they could decorate their booklets to make them special. We have some art supplies at school, but I told students that if there is anything they want to buy/bring from home, they can, but it is not a formal requirement. Donations are also welcome. You will see a few photos below of the planning process! On the Main blog you will find even more information about this project, as all classes are competing the project! Students were also introduced to their final Humanities project for the year! It is called their multicultural project. Students had to pick a country (any country in the world) and they will be doing a research project on it! Students will be given a few days in class to research this country. Once the research is done, they will be creating a poster, and we will be having a "multicultural fair" - more info to come soon! We will begin researching on Monday.

I can't believe how quickly the end of the year is approaching! In only a month or so, school will be done for the year, and our grade 4 students will be off to grade 5! Time really does fly. This week was a short week, but we managed to accomplish lots of things! Students worked on spelling week 17 this week, it was sent home on Tuesday. We've also managed to get lots of reading time in this week! Students have been requesting that we read for 30 minutes instead of 20 minutes (some students even wanted an hour a day of reading)! It's really amazing to see how they've all grown as readers, and how they all seem to really enjoy finding a book and expanding their imaginations! We also have been working to finish our unit on the peoples of Alberta! We've continued to lear about the immigrants and settlers that came to Alberta! We also learned about the many challenges they faced, including the drought of the 1930s, and the grasshoppers that came along with the warm/dry weather! We got a little bit of an insight into what life was like back then. We've been continuing to hear perspectives from people - either through journals, diaries, newspaper articles, and more! By hearing accounts of people and looking at photos/videos, it helps us gain more insight into the lives of Albertans. We finished our timelines this week, and our notes! Students did great with them! We will have a quiz next Thursday, May 31st. I will send home a small study guide on Monday. Students will have a bit of time on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to study in class (approximately 30 minutes each day). Hopefully this will help prepare them! Important Information: -Volunteer Appreciation - June 5th - stay tuned for more info. -Heritage Park Field Trip - Notes went home on May 23rd. Please return forms and money as soon as possible. The trip is on June 6th. -The Nose Creek Triathlon is coming up quickly on June 5th. -Taste of the Arts Night is on June 7th - check the main blog for more info! -There will be a few fun projects coming up in June for students to work on! Stay tuned for more info! -We had a library presentation Today, and monthly letters went home today as well! Have a great weekend! -Ms. Clark Welcome to the 34th week of school at NCS! This week has flown by! In humanities, we've continued to learn about settlers who came to Alberta. We learned more about ranching and farming, about how groups of immigrants kept their cultural identity/language/traditions alive, and about how Alberta became a province! We learned about some of the main reasons why Alberta decided to join Confederation, how borders were decided, and the impact it had on Alberta and it's citizens. Students have been asking really insightful questions, and engaging in discussions - way to go 4A and 4C! We've continued to look at maps, reading passages, perspectives and information about what life was like in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We'll be continuing on with this unit for a couple of more weeks before we have our quiz in late May. We also began a creative in class group task- our mind maps! Students were asked to look back through their notes/think about in-class discussions, and come up with a few key points to put on our mind map. Then, we created these mind maps in a collaborative way! All ideas were created by the students, and they came up with many important ideas! We've left some blank space for future important ideas. Please see photos below! The students know this will be another resource for them to study from, and it's a great way to organize information onto on key page (another study tip for students). We've continued to read in class daily, sometimes for up to 30 minutes! Way to go Grade 4's! This week was week 16 for spelling. We didn't have a chance to share any Creation Stories this week- but we'll be back to presenting and sharing stories next week! Many students have already had the chance to present, and are now practicing being good audience members, while hearing about many creative ideas! This week was mental health and wellness week! On Wednesday, we talked about ways to relieve stress, and we did mindful coloring! Students did a great job with their coloring, and brought home their pages yesterday! Please see below for a few photos! Important Information:
-No School on Friday, May 18th or Monday May 21st - Enjoy the extra long weekend -We had a practice fire drill this week - 4C, you did a GREAT JOB with being quiet and respectful during this! -Fun Lunch is next Wednesday. -Calgary Public Library Presentation next Friday in the morning! Have a great long weekend! -Ms. Clark Welcome to the 33rd week of school at NCS! My apologies for the late posting - it didn't upload on Friday and I didn't realize it! It's been another busy week here in grade 4! This week, students had a special experience with an "artist in residence" - we made "Pysanky Eggs!" This is a cultural tradition from Ukrainian people. It tied in really well to our unit in social studies, as we are currently learning about settlers that came to Canada and Alberta. In the late 1800's and early 1900's immigration from across the world to Alberta was occurring! This was mainly due to the offers of free farming land that the government of Canada was offering people if they moved to western Canada. We learned that this promise of free land was advertised around the world. Many Ukrainian settlers chose Alberta as their new homes, and brought with them, many cultural items and traditions. We were very excited to learn how it was done! Please see a few photos below! Some are during the process, and some are of the completed eggs, which were returned today (Monday) so I included them. As mentioned, this week we took a look at how settlement in the "west" occurred. We learned that the railway played a big role, as well as, HOW advertisements happened/ how the word was spread that Canada was offering free land to farmers out west. We learned about some of the cultural/religious groups that moved to Alberta, some of the inventions that they brought with them (e.g., irrigation systems for farming), and lots more! Students have been engaging in several discussions that we've had, read various information and accounts of people who moved to Alberta in this time period, continued to practice note taking, and more! We've been able to look at maps and pictures to help us make sense of how life was like back then. Additionally, we've looked at several advertisements that the government of Canada used to attract settlers to the west. We learned that some were able to be printed in colour, which helped to catch the eye of people. We also learned that they were printed in different languages too, to help inform potential settlers of what life was like! We practiced analyzing a poster, and worked on learning about effective forms of media. We looked at several old immigration posters. Then, students had a chance to create their own posters! They used lots of information that we've learned about in order to complete this project! Please see below for in-progress and completed posters! Important Information:

What a fun week it's been! This week students have been swimming daily, with their final lesson being on Thursday, and the "free swim" (no lesson, free time instead) being on Friday! They have been quite responsible this week, taking on this new challenge! I hope everyone has enjoyed their swimming lessons this week! :) In Humanities, we've been continuing to learn about settlers who came to Alberta. This week, we've learned more about Metis, early Francophone communities, early British communities, missionaries, Confederation, the railway, and how the ways of life changed for those living in Alberta (quite a bit of information, actually). We've had some really great discussions, looked more in depth at maps, old photos, learned about points of view and perspectives, continued to work on our timeline (and how to read them), and continued to practice our note taking skills. Both classes have been quite engaged and have asked great questions! We will be continuing to learn about settlers in Alberta/Western Canada next week, and even do some hands on activities! As this week was a bit of a different schedule due to swimming, it's a relatively short blog post this week for this week! Read below for a few key points of information for you. Important information: -Food Trucks tomorrow - bring change (if you can - it will make it quicker!) -Last day of swimming tomorrow! -You can continue to bring in book donations tomorrow - we are supporting "Calgary Reads" as a school by donating books! -Next Friday, we will be taking part in an exciting activity at school! More information to go home in our agendas next week. Stay tuned! Have a great weekend, enjoy the warm weather! -Ms. Clark Welcome to the 31st week of School at NCS! This week has been a fun week here at Nose Creek. We've done a variety of different things! Most notably, 4A and 4C went to the Shepard Landfill and Compost Facility on Tuesday! Our tour guide told us lots of interesting information, and we got to see many sections of the waste management area. As of earlier this year, Shepard Landfill has no longer been accepting residential waste - so the landfill did look a little bit different, but was still quite interesting to see. We got to see many stages of a "cell" which is where the garbage/waste is stored, once it's been sorted. We also got to see the brand new compost facility, and learn a bit more about waste reducing initiatives that the City of Calgary has been working towards. See below for a few photos of our trip! We've also been working on many other things this week! Students have continued to share their creation stories with both 4A and 4C in flex this week. The stories are very creative, and it's great to have all of the students sharing as one big group! We've also had a small amount of time to read this week (a little bit less than usually though, due to field trips, and other activities planned)! We've mainly been working on furthering our understanding of the early explorers and fur traders that traveled across Canada to Alberta. We've watched videos of voyageurs and their life! We've also read lots about them. We learned what challenges they faced, as well as, why they might have decided to become a voyageur. We learned about how they traveled, where they traveled, and what they did! Thursday, we wrote letters from the perspectives of the voyageurs. Some of the letters were very creative, and We've also begun to learn about the Metis, and their lives! Additionally, we've been looking at maps, writing down key notes, and learning how to use/read/create a timeline. On Friday, we worked on our April Monthly Letters, and worked on a design challenge with other students from grade 4! We did our first school-wide design challenge in February, and now everyone has a second change to do some hands on problem solving and creating! The grade 4's saw a small presentation that the teachers put together, and then got started! They had to try and create a "Critter Carnival" attraction/ride. They had some great ideas, and everyone had a great time working together on the task! Below you will see a few photos of our design challenge work! Important Information:
-Swimming- Monday-Friday next week! Please ensure that your child comes to class with proper footwear, and is dressed for the weather. They need their bathing suits, towels, a bag, goggles are optional. They should also bring an extra snack! -Food Trucks are coming next Friday morning. Students can use "truck bucks" or money! See posters at school or the main school website! -No more RRJ's - they are done for the year! :) Have a great weekend! -Ms. Clark |
