Both classes worked on their portraits this week. They also wrote 3 sentences using a model about their body parts. They incorporated their knowledge of numbers as well. Below is a sample the sentences. Students also read their sentences to the class on Thursday, December 21.
C’est mon corps. J’ai deux mains, deux yeux et une bouche. J’ai aussi vingt-huit dents et deux jambes.

Students have been learning what the parts of the body are in French. We practiced singing "Head and shoulders, knees and toes" as well as another song. Both videos are attached below. The kids are also working on drawing a self portrait and labeling their body parts. Next week they will write 3 sentences to accompany their drawing and present it to the class. 4E will present their 3 sentences on Wednesday, December 20 4B will present their 3 sentences on Thursday, December 21 Last week students completed their French quiz on the numbers from 40-69, the days of the week and the months of the year. There was a listening portion on this quiz that many students found difficult. 4E's quizzes went home last week and 4B's will go home on Monday, December 11. Please sign and return the quiz. This week we will be working on learning the parts of the body in French which will continue to the winter break!
Students received a copy of our vocabulary this week to practice for their upcoming French oral test. 4A will be starting oral tests on Monday and 4D will start on Tuesday of next week. A copy of the vocabulary is below as well as the rubric being used. I'm looking for understanding of French phrases and vocabulary, and proper accent when speaking aloud. Students also learned how to say the colours in French this week. They will be working on a booklet to reinforce this vocabulary while students are being pulled for their test. We also went over some holiday vocabulary in class to get us in the festive spirit!
—Mme Jagger French Oral Test Vocabulary Mr. Brewer will conduct French oral tests in the month of December. Details are given in the file below. A copy of this page will be given out to students on Monday and Wednesday this week:
Students continued to learn, write and practice vocabulary associated with the weather and temperature. They made a weather cube this week to practice their new vocabulary with a partner in class, and then took it home to practice with a family member. After colouring the weather pictures, students made a dice by cutting, then folding and securing the sides. To play, take turns throwing the dice. The thrower asks in French what the weather is like. The other player must describe the weather as shown on the uppermost face of the dice. The vocabulary is below—have fun playing!
—Mme Jagger Students in 4C and 4F received back their rubrics for the introductory conversation. The results from this initial conversation were by in large very good. Students have gained fluency and much self-confidence in their ability to introduce themselves. They now know the following phrases:
Comment ça va? (How are you?) Quel est la date aujourd’hui? (What’s today’s date?) Quel âge as-tu? (How old are you?) Comment t’appelles-tu? (What’s your name?) We are now asking a different question: Quel temps-fait-il? (How is the weather?). We have studied a number of responses as well. We have been using the following site to study this: www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/french/french.htm Students can find useful games and learning activities at this site. Lessons about how to tell the weather can be found at Section 28. The Weather: www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/french/sect28/index.htm Grade 4's continued to work with the calendar this week. We practiced the months of the year and learned the days of the week. The days of the week link is below. Both classes will be having a quiz on the numbers from 40-69, the days of the week and the months of the year. Tests dates are also below. 4E - Monday, December 4 4B - Tuesday, December 5 4E unfortunately lost another French class this week so only wrote their numbers quiz. Quizzes for both 4B and 4E have been sent home to be signed and returned to school. 4B began learning the months of the year. One thing to remember about the French months is they are written with a lowercase letter. There is a link below to help them practice the months at home. 4E will start learning the months of the year on Monday. In common with the other French classes 4C and 4F are also learning to say the alphabet in French. In class we practiced how to say, "Je m'appelle ____" then students spelled their names in French. Our other area of study recently has been family/kinship terms in French. Students learned that when talking about a female family member they should use ma/ta (my/your) and when speaking about a male they use mon/ton (my/your). It was briefly explained that one can use 'mes' (my plural) to describe more than one person, though the majority of practice in class has focused on the essential difference between masculine and feminine nouns. This is an essential feature of French grammar that is largely lacking in English. Students were made aware that 'mon' must be used in conjunction with a masculine noun and 'ma' must be used in conjunction with a feminine noun. All students have performed an introductory French skit in front of the class. Mr. Brewer is working on marking these skits in advance of the forthcoming parent/teacher conferences and they should be coming back shortly to students.
