Math – Students began their Telling Time unit in math this week! They learned about ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.), as well as day and month abbreviations - e.g. Monday = Mon. and January = Jan. Students also learned that some months have thirty days, while other months have thirty-one days. And sometimes February has twenty-eight days and sometimes it has twenty-nine! Students enjoyed reading and discussing the months poem posted below. 4E and 4F students also began learning how to read time on both analog and digital clocks; they will continue to explore these, as well as elapsed time concepts in the coming week. Students wrote a short pop quiz on Wednesday, and I will distribute the quizzes with grades for parental review on Monday. Students should continue to explore and review the notes in their math duotang daily and throughout this unit as some concepts appear to be very challenging for students. Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. There are a series of telling time challenges set up on Prodigy for 4E and 4F students to explore and tackle. Good luck! Problem of the Week – This week's problem is posted below. In the problem this week students will look at the value of coins. They will need to use approximation skills and estimation. Enjoy!
Estimation Station – We had a tricky Estimation Station set up this week, thanks to T.O. from 4F. We will discuss the outcome on Monday! Science – Students spent their class time this week researching and beginning to construct marshmallow catapults! The Marshmallow Catapult project will be the last one for this unit and students are very excited about it! A list of materials for this project was posted below earlier in the week, and students are welcome to bring in their own supplies too. 4E and 4F will use their catapults to complete in our very own Catapult Olympics! Here are a few photos from the research and construction process so far... A big thank you and kudos to Mackenzie who brought in and shared her homemade trebuchet this week! The students loved seeing how the trebuchet worked and also spent some time comparing its parts and function to the catapult. It was a wonderful learning experience for everyone! Internet Scavenger Hunt Please read your assignment carefully! These websites and videos are listed in the order in which you should visit and view them. 4E and 4F students seemed to return from Spring Break well-rested and with loads of energy and enthusiasm for learning! It was great to see them back in class again, and I'm looking forward to our last 12 or so weeks together. Math – This week, students worked through various mathematical tasks and activities in class. They received their eighth "Math in a Flash" book, and continue to make progress with their mental math skills and understanding of mixed operation concepts. Students worked hard all week in class and were able to finish up the Division unit. They even wrote a short quiz on Thursday! I will have students' division quizzes and grades back to them on Monday. Overall, the students performed very well in this unit! 4E and 4F's have since moved onto our Telling Time unit! They enjoyed working through a few introductory problems involving Time on the Prodigy website on Friday, and will continue to explore both calendar and telling time concepts and skills in the coming week. In the Telling Time unit, students will learn to read and record time (using digital and analog clocks), including 24-hour clocks. They will also learn to read and record calendar dates in a variety of formats. Please take some time reviewing minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years with your child (grade three concepts). Prodigy – Students are always encouraged to log into Prodigy at home in their spare time to brush up on their math skills and understanding of concepts. I have set up various Telling Time problems for students to complete at home, which will assist and guide them through our current math unit. Here is the link to Prodigy: www.prodigygame.com/Play/ Problem of the Week – This week's Problem of the Week is posted below. I always encourage students to complete these extra enrichment problems on their own time and to submit them to me for review. This week, we will try to find the shortest distance. Good luck, 4E and 4F students!
Estimation Station – There were 317 black-eyed peas in our Estimation Station jar this week. Congratulations to T.O. in 4F who came closest with 315. That was a stellar estimate! We will look forward to seeing what T.O. sets up in the jar for this coming week! Science – In Science, students took a closer look at pulleys and gears. They constructed flagpole and sailboat models with the K'NEX kits, which featured fixed pulley systems. Students were able to build on this understanding to construct moveable pulleys using various supplies in our classroom (i.e. string, paperclips, tape). They enjoyed experimenting with both light and heavy loads. It was a fabulous week of hands-on learning in our classroom (see photos below)! Next week, students will move onto the final portion of the Simple Machines unit. They will be researching and constructing marshmallow catapults! Parents, be prepared to send in some supplies from home, as students will be designing their own systems. I will provide most supplies (i.e. popsicle sticks, elastics, marshmallows), but I'm sure students will think deeper about other useful materials that may enhance their projects! Upcoming Events and Important Due Dates – Grade 4 students were given permission forms for an upcoming field trip to the composting facility and Shepard Landfill! Forms and money are due back to homeroom teachers on Tuesday, April 10. Many thanks to all the parents who have volunteered to attend this trip. We have enough parents for 4F but are still looking for ONE more volunteer for 4E! We are looking into ordering some gluten free pizza on Friday for students who can’t eat wheat. If this is something that interests your child, please email Miss Malayko ([email protected]) so we can gauge numbers. On Friday, the grade 4,5,6’s attended the annual magazine fundraiser kick off assembly. If your child is in grade 4,5 or 6 they have received a fundraiser package. The fundraiser will run until Friday April 13th. All sales will be given to Mrs. Bennett in the Learning Commons. The students will be able to earn “Truck Bucks” with their sales. On Friday May 4th local food trucks will be at our school and students will be able to reimburse their “Truck Bucks” at this event. If you have any questions please email Mrs. Bennett at [email protected]. Thank you to the students who participated in the 59 minute fundraiser on Friday! It was a lot of fun, truck bucks and vip passes were earned and we raised about $5090 in one day for new school resources! Green Week is coming April 23! Stayed tuned for activities, challenges, prizes and the bake sale information. Thanks, from the Senior Green Team! If your child is in grade four and interested in joining the Grade 4 Drama Club, please ensure they see Mrs. Ross for a permission form as the club begins next month! The club will meet after school in the Foods Room on Wednesdays from 3-4pm beginning on May 2. Permission forms are due back to Mrs. Ross on or before April 17! 4E and 4F's pulley and gear systems...Have some free time on your hands? Check out this amazing website! It is filled with many wonderful games and activities to further your understanding of Simple Machines.
Math – This week, students continued their learning in the division unit. They received individual copies of the Group Division Challenge from last week, which included an evaluation for each group. Students also received a series of basic division tasks, and were given some class time to work independently through the problems in their duotangs. The due date for these division tasks is: Tuesday, April 3. (Please see the photo post below if your child struggles to read the photocopied tasks.)
Prodigy – 4E and 4F students are encouraged to visit and log into the Prodigy website over Spring Break. There are many wonderful problems and challenges for students to solve at their individual levels! www.prodigygame.com/Play/ Science – Students continued to learn about gears and pulley systems in science this week. They enjoyed the "I Spy" picture task, which had them exploring and identifying both gears and pulleys in a real-world setting. My 4E and 4F students were very clever as they worked through this challenge, and were able to identify three more pulley systems than I could! Way to go, Kodiaks! Students also enjoyed playing the Gear Game and Goldberg to Go games on laptops (see links posted below), and are encouraged to explore this simple machines website over the break: interactivesites.weebly.com/simple-machines.html Monthly Letters – Last week, students wrote March's monthly letter in their journals. There are a few students in 4F who have still not returned their journals, despite ongoing reminders. Flex – We enjoyed listening to three more favorite childhood stories in 4F this week! I have not assigned anymore students to share theirs, but will do so after the break.
