Math – This week, students continued their learning in the division unit. They received individual copies of the Group Division Challenge from last week, which included an evaluation for each group. Students also received a series of basic division tasks, and were given some class time to work independently through the problems in their duotangs. The due date for these division tasks is: Tuesday, April 3. (Please see the photo post below if your child struggles to read the photocopied tasks.)
Prodigy – 4E and 4F students are encouraged to visit and log into the Prodigy website over Spring Break. There are many wonderful problems and challenges for students to solve at their individual levels! www.prodigygame.com/Play/ Science – Students continued to learn about gears and pulley systems in science this week. They enjoyed the "I Spy" picture task, which had them exploring and identifying both gears and pulleys in a real-world setting. My 4E and 4F students were very clever as they worked through this challenge, and were able to identify three more pulley systems than I could! Way to go, Kodiaks! Students also enjoyed playing the Gear Game and Goldberg to Go games on laptops (see links posted below), and are encouraged to explore this simple machines website over the break: interactivesites.weebly.com/simple-machines.html Monthly Letters – Last week, students wrote March's monthly letter in their journals. There are a few students in 4F who have still not returned their journals, despite ongoing reminders. Flex – We enjoyed listening to three more favorite childhood stories in 4F this week! I have not assigned anymore students to share theirs, but will do so after the break. Math – 4E and 4F students wrote their multiplication test on Monday, which marked the end of the unit. The tests have since been graded and returned to students for parental review/signatures. We are now working in the division unit! During the past few classes, students learned division vocabulary and viewed/discussed the division video posted below. They also worked in groups with manipulatives to solve a series of problems involving apples. Students were able to use division tables to independently complete two basic division tasks. The "Division Facts A" task is due on Monday. Prodigy – Students enjoyed working online in Prodigy today! They are currently working through a series of 10 assigned division problems and are encouraged to log in on their own time at home to ensure the problems are complete. Problem of the Week – There is no problem assigned this week. I'll post our next one after Spring Break! Estimation Station – There were 237 chocolate chips in the Estimation Station jar this week. Congratulations to D.O. in 4F for guessing that number right on the nose! Brilliant job! Science – Students wrote a short simple machines quiz on Wednesday. These quizzes will be graded over the weekend and distributed to students next week. This week, 4E and 4F students learned that gears are also important simple machines. A gear is just a wheel with teeth, sometimes called a cog. To do any work with a gear, you need to have at least two cogs with their teeth fitting into each other. Because the teeth fit together, when you turn one gear, the other one turns too! Gears come in many different sizes, which help them do work. Students will continue to learn about gears by exploring online games (see the link below) and constructing various machines with K'nex kits! Monthly Letters – Students wrote March's Monthly Letter today. Please read, sign and have your child return the journal on Monday. Flex – We continue to enjoy 4F's favorite childhood stories during our Flex time after lunch. Next week, N.R., M.L. and L.W. will share their stories!
